I still cannot sync my iTouch to my desktop, I still receive the “The iPod “Bryan’s iTouch” cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to” error.
To summarize, again, here is everything I’ve tried:
- Restore to previous backup
- Restore to brand new iPod Touch
- Re-register ddls
- Delete photo cache
- Re-start Apple Mobiel service and Uninstall Apple Mobile driver and re-install it
- Different USB ports, including USB ports on a PCI card
- Tried the “Scan Hardware” or “Unplug/replug a USB device” while syncing trick
- Performed DFU restores
- Purge iTunes to hell (uninstalled completely, ran a registry cleaning program, reinstall iTunes)
However, I have found a solution! Not the solution that I necessarily wanted, but it works! My iTouch syncs perfectly to both my laptop and my mom’s laptop. Therefore the problem therein lies with my desktop and I have no idea what else I can do to fix the problem. I have since started syncing to my laptop with zero problems for about two weeks now.
Unfortunately, this solution results in another problem: my iTunes library of music is on my desktop, not my laptop. However, I have a theoretical solution! If I put my music on a share accessible by both computers (i.e. lets say the M:\ drive on both computers points to the same location of music) and keep the two library.xml files on the computers synced with each other then I should be able to retain ratings, playlists, etc. between both computers. I have not had time to try this out yet, but it should work in theory. The only downside to this is that you would only be able to have one library open at a time and must sync them everytime you would want to open the library on the other machine.
Although this was not my desired solution, I am just now very happy to be able to keep my iTouch synced to any machine.

However, I have not thoroughly been enjoying the constant battle with iTunes. Specifically, I keep getting the following error message when attempting to sync to my iPod Touch: “The iPod “Bryan’s iTouch” cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to.”
I’ve tried all of the following to no avail:
- Restore to previous backup
- Restore to brand new iPod Touch
- Re-register ddls
- Delete photo cache
- Re-start Apple Mobiel service and Uninstall Apple Mobile driver and re-install it
- Different USB ports, including USB ports on a PCI card
- Tried the “Scan Hardware” or “Unplug/replug a USB device” while syncing trick
Purge iTunes to hell
About the only thing I haven’t tried is a DFU restore and I really have a feeling that is not going to work.
I just hope I can figure this out soon…. will post an update if I do manage to do so.

My brother gave me an old iPhone case he had (thanks bro!), but I’m not sure how well it is going to work (since the iTouch is much slimmer than the iPhone). It’ll at least do me for now until I can get something more snug for it.
I already started hunting down good free apps before I even received it. I’ll be sure to update what all good ones I like and recommend.

The biggest hurdle, however, is the fact that development of the iPhone/iTouch is restricted to Apple’s hardware only. In other words, if you don’t have a machine that can run OSX, you are out of luck. And I don’t have a machine that can run (or emulate) OSX. But I’d really like to purchase a Mac mini in the near future to overcome this problem. Unfortunately, that near future won’t be until I graduate and am making enough money to do so.
I just hope the “goldrush” for iPhone applications will last that long. A little extra side money never hurt anyone. At least I have time to come up with the ideas for the “next big app”, right?
Posted in ipod | 2 Comments »Just loaded a bunch of songs into my itunes library recently (1500+). I wish there was a quicker way to rate through them other than:1) Sample song for up to 10 seconds
2) Rate it
3) Next song.
The problem is: 1500 x 10 seconds / 60 secs = 250 min > 4 hours.
Best case scenario is it taking 2 seconds a song: 1500 x 2 seconds / 60 seconds = 50 min < 1 hour.
So 1-4 hours later, I should be done.
But this process is even slower if I have to rate my songs from my iPod. The damn thing won’t stay in the rate song mode. It’ll keep the 5 star rating mode up for about 5-10 seconds and then will revert back to the volume mode. And pressing the middle click wheel button 3 times just to get back to it once I’m ready to rate another song is just down right annoying.
I could also “rate by artist” and give an artist I’m already comfortable with a standard baseline rating. But what about the occasional sucky songs? Or even the good songs? Still have to sample the songs sooner or later and bump it up or down.
Another problem to conquer is tags (metadata) associated with each song. There are apparently programs that will tag your songs for you based off their file characteristics, even by sampling some of the song. But I haven’t tried this yet.
But this program, iTunes Tagger, looks promising. It’ll use sampling/fingerprinting by checking against Last.fm or musicbrainz. And here is another called Tweet that seems to work similarly. I haven’t tested any of these yet, but I will try them and post my results asap.

2) But you cannot discuss a thing about programming for the iPhone due to a NDA (non-disclosure agreement). No forums, newsgroup, open source programs, tutorials, printed materials, etc. etc. etc.
wtf, mate?

Well, you definitely need to watch Pork and Beans which has quite a few popular Internet memes/videos:
Posted in ipod | 2 Comments »So I was walking to class today, listening to my iPod when I realized: I was only hearing music through one ear.
Lo and behold, my left ear bud was (physically) busted. I don’t how I did it, but it doesn’t work anymore. So here is a new item for the Christmas wishlist:
- iPod earbuds. They must be flexible (i.e. I can wrap them around the iPod and shove the thing in my pocket. I do have a working pair of headphones that don’t fit well into my pocket).
And while we are on the iPod:
- iPod carrying case? Something aesthetically pleasing to look at and has a belt clip. This would be a decent example. Or maybe this (if it has a clip). I already have a cover that is thin and was originally meant for when I went running (oh the irony of my foot injury not allowing me to do such a thing!), but I’d like a nicer one too! (Note: it is a 5th Generation video iPod that is white).
So I upgraded my iPod firmware to 1.2.1 last night since I haven’t ran any updates for it in a loooonnnggg time. Well, I get ready to go to class this morning and take my iPod with me to listen to on the way to class… Well, I start to choose a playist and….. there are none?! And I check the music and…. it was all gone?! Apparently upgrading the firmware had some adverse affect of wiping the iPod. Except, when I plug it in to my desktop later I can see and play any of the tracks on my iPod! Go figure, I’ll probably end up really wiping and reloading the thing (something I’ve really been wanting to do for awhile).
All I can say is hopefully it fixed the bug of my iPod always refusing to cut off whenever I want it to (either holding the pause/play button OR by choosing “sleep” in the menu). It doesn’t do it all the time, only whenever I really want to turn it off.
However, if you are daring and want to spiffy up your old video iPod, you can give your older video iPod the newer classic iPod look. I haven’t tried it, but it does look pretty neat.
