[Time Warner Cable going to tiered pricing]

TWC wants to change Internet plans from unlimited to a really bad idea: tiered pricing.  It would work just like cell phone plans: you guess how much data you might use and get charged extra if you go over.  $1/gigabyte in overage fees.  wtf?  It would be cheaper to buy a DVD and mail it to someone else.

However, there is some good news.  Some of the areas (i.e. Greensboro) going under trial for the new tiered pricing are being “canceled” or “delayed” because people are making a big enough fuss about it.

Why would TWC want to do this?  Because FREE (as in beer) video streaming services like Hulu and PAID services like Netflix are slowly cutting away at their dying TV market.  Why watch a show on TV when you can watch it online at your own leisure with fewer commercials?  These caps would also hurt other legitimate users: people who buy games online (and download them), videos, music, etc.

This really ticks me off.  I would go back to DSL before I would sucomb to this highway robbery.

[UNC students need to learn how to protest]

Step 1. Start a controversial group on campus, one that supposedly is “White Supremacy” related and anti-immigrant.

Step 2. Invite a highly controversial speaker, one Tom Tancredo, a former congressman who would apparently love to blow up Mecca.

Step 3. Attempt to protest the speaker from speaking by pulling out a huge sign in front of him and breaking a window.  Police try to control the crowd with warning sprays of pepper spray and Tazer shots.

Step 4. Make our university look like a bunch of liberal idiots.  Thanks.

I think the message was right, but I agree that the method was wrong. You can’t impede someone’s right to be wrong-headed and you aren’t going to change minds by attempting to drown out opposing views. I think if they had just allowed Tancredo to speak, he would have done more to advance their cause than they actually did themselves by trying to stop him.

I totally agree. They could have simply held up signs peacefully while giving Tom a chance to speak and THEN return their views in a discussion….
